What are the qualities of an ideal father? He must protect his child from danger. He must provide sustenance for his child. He must have authority. He must love the mother. He must teach the child and love him or her. We all measure the real father against the ideal.

So the Father Card asks us to bring to mind our own real father and what he has or has not done for us. Our reactions are governed by our upbringing, our position in the family as siblings and our specific situation. We may have feelings of affection, admiration, humour or anger. It may raise thoughts about the nuclear family and how well it has worked in our case. But we need to know what we feel.
